The Sikorsky VH-34D Presidential helicopter is a redesigned HUS-1Z, a staff transport helicopter in the early 1960s. This came as a result of the US military restructuring of 1962, which required a change to all operational aircraft designations. The VH-34D came about as a project of the US Army Executive Flight Detachment and Marine Helicopter Squadron One. It was designed with one main mission in mind—the emergency evacuation of the President and his family, as well as key government officials. As the main executive transport aircraft, the VH-34D Presidential helicopter is equipped with self-sealing, crash-resistant fuel tanks, energy-absorbing landing gear, and seating that improved wreckage survivability. This Presidential helicopter was also developed under license from 1958 in the United Kingdom by Westland Aircraft as the turbine-engine Wessex. The Wessex was used by the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, and was also exported to other countries and produced for civilian use.
