Product Description

The Travel Air Type R "Mystery Ships" were a series of wire-braced, low-wing racing airplanes built by the Travel Air company in the late 1920s and early 1930s. They were called "Mystery Ships" because the first three aircraft of the series were built entirely in secrecy, the builders even painted the factory windows to keep the curious press from getting a look at it. In September 1929, the "Mystery Ship" was entered in the Thompson Cup Race. Pilot Doug Davis won at a speed of 194.9 mph, beating the military entries, even recircling one of the pylons. This was the first time in the history of air racing that a civilian racer had outperformed a military aircraft. A total of five "Mystery Ships" were built and they have set numerous speed records for both pylon racing and cross country flying.

This handcrafted model is painted in the same paint scheme as the original and is painstakingly built from Philippine mahogany by our skilled craftsmen. Perfect as a gift for any aviation enthusiast and history buff!
